2022 Mercedes Benz C Class Launched In India From 55 Lakh

Hybrid powertrains become the soul of W206 C Class

Mercedes Benz has launched the 2022 C Class in the country with the ex-showroom prices starting from Rs 55 lakh. 2022 Mercedes Benz C Class (W206) is available in 3 variants here- C200, C220d, and C300d. The new generation stands out for using hybrid engines across the range. The new C Class portfolio draws its juice from one petrol and 2 diesel engines. Mercedes had started taking bookings exclusively from existing Mercedes owners earlier this month and claims to have received overwhelming responses from the same.

Mercedes Benz calls the new C Class a ‘Baby S Class’ and the vehicle does absolute justice to this with its design and cabin experience. Underpinned by the MRA2 platform, the new C is significantly larger than its predecessor. The length, width, and wheelbase (up by 25mm) have all gone up. The new C gets shorter overhangs, sleeker headlamps and tail lamps, a refreshed shoulder line, and reworked surfaces. The compact sedan is now available in 6 colorways- Salatine Grey, Mojave Silver, High-tech Silver, Cavansite Blue, Obsidian Black, and Manufaktur Opalite White. The last 3 shades are available just on the range-topping C300d.

The cabin has been extensively reworked on the W206. There are 3 different interior colorways to choose from- Macchiato Beige, Sienna Brown, and Black. Some extent of personalization is available on the trims too. The overall design and layout would resemble those of the larger S Class. There are a lot of new features like a huge 11.9-inch vertically-placed touchscreen infotainment system (that takes a major share of the central real estate) with a second-generation MBUX infotainment engine, connected car tech, voice assistance, an improved steering wheel with touch-based controls, dual-pane sunroof with touch slider operation, dual-zone climate control, digital cockpit, powered front seats, wireless charger, etc. The comfort and space at the rear have also had huge leaps up.

Specifications

On the mechanical front, the second-generation MRA platform comes with the same suspension setup as the previous-gen- one that consists of double wishbones at the front, and an independent multi-link setup at the rear. The spring, damping, and anti-roll settings for these have, however, been reworked to ensure more comfort and better handling.

In the first instance in its history, the W206 has got hybrid engines on all its variants. The base-spec C200 gets a smaller 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine coupled with a 48V mild-hybrid technology and an integrated starter generator motor. The C220d, entry- point of the diesel lineup, gets a 2.0L four-cylinder hybrid diesel churning out 204hp and 300 Nm. The range-topping C300d gets the same engine in a higher state of tune wherein the output figures are 265hp and 550Nm. Up to 20hp and 200Nm would also come from the hybrid setup. The 9-speed G Tronic automatic remains the sole gearbox on offer. With these drivetrains, the petrol-powered C200 and base diesel- C220d can both do the 0-100kph sprint in just 7.3 seconds. The top-of-the-line C300d however, is much faster, doing the same in just 5.7 seconds.
