2022 Maruti Suzuki S Cross Breaks Cover

Maruti S Cross gains more SUV character with the update!

Suzuki today unveiled the second generation Maruti Suzuki S Cross for the European markets. From the pictures and details that have surfaced yet, it is evident that the 2022 S Cross is significantly fresh in design and will have a 1.4L hybrid petrol engine.

Design

The new S Cross is underpinned by an updated version of Suzuki’s Global C platform, in the Euro markets. (If you might remember, the gen-1 S Cross that is currently on sale in India is based on the HEARTECT platform) It is 4300 mm long, 1,785mm wide, and 1,585 mm tall. It has a wheelbase of 2,600 mm and in fact, stands slightly shorter than the outgoing model. Suzuki says the new S Cross offers more room on the inside than its predecessor.

In terms of design, the S Cross now looks more SUV-ish. It gets a thorough overhaul in the overall design. The new S Cross features a new larger honeycomb grille finished in Piano grille, large tri-beam LED headlamps that could remind you of those of the XL6, new fog lamps, skid plates, and reworked bumper at the front and rear. The vehicle rides on 17-inch dual-tone, five-spoke alloy wheels, and has prominent body claddings on its sides. The rear end looks stylish with a new set of wraparound tail lamps, an integrated spoiler, a reflective insert and skid plate.

Interior And Features

The cabin of the new S Cross also looks fresh and is quite comfortable. The dashboard looks evidently different from that of the previous car and feels more upmarket. The steering wheel design might seem familiar to existing Suzuki customers. Things like gear lever, power window controls, climate control dials, and buttons have all been carried over from the previous car.

Key features on offer include a large 9.0-inch freestanding touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual-zone climate control, revised instrument cluster, heated front seats, keyless entry, panoramic sunroof, and a 360-degree camera. The Euro-spec car also gets several driver-assistance features as standard, including traffic-sign recognition, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control etc.

Engine, Platform And Transmission

2022 Maruti S Cross has an improved guise of the Global C platform as its base. It draws its power from Suzuki’s new-gen 1.4L, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine (Boosterjet) that churns out 127hp and 235 Nm. The engine hosts a significantly improved version of Suzuki’s 48V mild hybrid system for better efficiency and improved acceleration. The vehicle gets two transmission options on offer- a 6-speed manual and 6 speed automatic. The top-spec variant also features Suzuki’s AllGrip AWD system. The vehicle is known to do the 0-100 kph run in 9.5 seconds.

Variants And Prices

Suzuki offers the new S Cross in two distinct trims in Europe- Motion and Ultra, priced at £24,999 (roughly translating to Rs 24.83 lakh) and £29,799 (roughly 29.60 lakh) respectively. The vehicle will be manufactured at the Suzuki facility in Hungary.

India Launch?

There’s no clue yet if Suzuki would launch the new S Cross in India. However, the S Cross has been a familiar name in the Indian context and if launched here, could compete with the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Sletos and MG astor in the mid-size SUV space.

The upcoming launches from Maruti that we know of yet are the updated Baleno, and refreshed Brezza. The Baleno is expected sometime early next year and the Brezza could follow later in 2022. The Ertiga and XL6 are also hoped to get updates in 2022. Plus, we also know that Maruti Suzuki is working on a Creta rival, in association with Toyota, for a probable 2023 launch.
