Brilliant pricing for Hyundai’s first skateboard EV!
Hyundai has expanded its electric vehicle portfolio in India with the launch of the brand-new Ioniq5 at the ongoing 2023 Auto Expo in Greater Noida. This is the second EV from the South Korean automaker to be launched in India, following the Kona Electric.
The launch took place in the gracious presence of the one & only Baadshah of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan, who has been an ambassador of Hyundai for ages now. King Khan has been an integral part of Hyundai India and has attended Hyundai events without fail for the past few years.
Hyundai recently previewed the India-spec Ioniq 5 in front of the Gateway of India in Mumbai, and also commenced the bookings the following day at a reservation amount of ₹1,00,000. Fast forward to January 2023, Hyundai has officially launched the Ioniq 5 in the Indian market at an introductory price of ₹44.95 Lakhs. This price is only applicable to the First 500 Customers of the Ioniq 5.

The Ioniq 5 was first presented to the world as the 45 EV Concept at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2019, with the production-ready model making its global debut in February 2021. Both the concept and production model were inspired by the original Hyundai Pony. The number “45” represents the 45th anniversary of the Pony Coupe.
The Ioniq 5 was also crowned as the ‘World Car of The Year’ at the 2022 World Car Awards. It clinched the ‘World Car Design of the Year’, ‘World Electric Vehicle of the Year’ and the awards as well. Congratulations to Hyundai for that.
The Ioniq 5’s is the founding member of Hyundai’s electric sub-brand named “Ioniq”, and the first vehicle to be underpinned by the E-GMP platform, which is the same as its cousin-the Kia EV6. The benefits of this architecture includes supporting scalable battery sizes, a flat floor, RWD or AWD configurations, and EV specific proportions. The Ioniq 5 is noticeably bigger and sits much lower than a Creta. This is classified as a compact SUV.

The Parametric Pixel design for the headlights, brake lights, and 20-inch wheels; the clamshell bonnet that spans the entire width, making a smooth and seamless look; the sharp shoulder line and the 45-degree cuts on the side; the auto flush door handles, etc. are the highlight design elements on the exterior. Since this is an electric car, there’s no front grille or openings for the air to pass through, the grille area is enclosed with a gloss black panel.

The interior features a fairly minimalistic yet futuristic design. It gets a sliding centre console, pair of 12.3-inch touchscreens-one for the instrument cluster and the other for the infotainment system, head up display with augmented reality functions, Vision roof, memory seats, heating and ventilation for the front seats, BOSE 8-speaker premium sound system, Level 2 ADAS with 21 features, etc.
The leather used on the inside is dyed using flaxseed oil; the headlining and carpet fabric contain bio components extracted from sugarcane and corn; the crash pad and door trims are painted using bio paint; the detailing on the door is done with recyclable paperette, and recycled bottles are shredded into plastic chips used for the seat backs and door armrests.
But the biggest party trick is a feature called the V2L or Vehicle 2 Load Function, which was demonstrated during the preview back in December 2022. 3 out of 8 projectors used in the event were powered using Ioniq 5’s V2L function where the power is extracted from the vehicle itself. The V2L can also be used to power electrical appliances up to 3.6 kW from the inside and outside the vehicle. Hyundai India has also announced that the Ioniq 5 will be locally assembled, unlike its cousin- the Kia EV6-which is sold as a fully imported vehicle.
Hyundai plans to assemble the Ioniq 5 using Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits at its assembly plants in Tamil Nadu, as the import duty on them are only 15%. On the other hand, a Completely Built Unit (CBU) like the Kia EV6 carries an astonishing 60% import duty.
