Mahindra has launched an entry-level variant on the new-gen Thar- giving it a new engine and 4X2 layout. These prices could sound unreal for an RWD product, considering the fact that RWD builds demand more investments than FWDs. However, Mahindra has managed to find a fix by opting for a smaller engine and keeping the overall length under 4 meter to bring down the tax slabs.

Mahindra stated that with such lower pricing, the company could attract a new and wider range of customers who wishes to live the Thar life. The Thar 2WD is supposed to be accessible to customers who are looking for a daily-drive, without compromising the road presence they are looking for. The price difference between the 4×2 and 4×4 petrol Versions is around Rs. 2.33 lakh and the price difference between the 4×2 and 4×4 diesel variants is around Rs. 3.88 to Rs. 4.17Lakh.

New colours for Mahindra Thar RWD: Blazing Bronze and Everest White

The new Mahindra Thar 4WD draws its juice from 2.2 MHawk diesel and 2.0 mStallion petrol engines. The RWD version, however, is powered by a smaller 1.5L, 4-cylinder diesel engine- D117. I you’d recollect, this is the same engine as the Mahindra Marazzo. On the Thar, it produces 117 hp and 300 Nm. A 6-speed manual remains the only transmission offered. No automatics!

Thar 4X2 also comes with a petrol engine- 2.0L, 4 cylinder mStallion petrol engine (in a toned down form) churning out 150hp and 320 Nm. This engine comes mated to a 6-speed automatic box alone. The RWD and smaller power outputs on this would make the petrol-powered Thar 4X2 more fuel efficient than the previous petrol Thar 4X4.

The 4×2 version is visually identical to the 4WD on the exterior. The only noticeable difference is the lack of the 4×4 badge. It is also available in two new colour options: Blazing Bronze and Everest White, along with the existing colours of the 4WD. The interior comes with slight changes from the former model, as the space of the 4×4 selector is replaced with a cubby hole. The new Thar also has an auto start/stop function. Buttons for traction control, hill descent control and door lock/unlock are repositioned from the control panel to the centre console. Front and rear hand rests are also introduced in the new model. The 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, cruise control, LED DRLs, etc also come in the new model.
