MG Comet EV Production Begins In India, Ahead Of April 19 Debut!

Comet EV deliveries could start in May!

MG Motor India recently announced that the production of its highly anticipated Comet EV has officially begun, with plans to launch it in May this year. The India-spec Comet EV will be unveiled on April 19th, and it’s likely that bookings for the vehicle will also start on the same day. Targeted towards city commuters who are interested in a small electric car, the Comet EV will be MG’s most compact EV model for India.

The first made-in-India Comet EV has been manufactured at the brand’s Halol facility. The vehicle is built on the globally recognized GSEV electric platform, which has already seen over one million city-specific EVs sold worldwide. Additionally, there is a forthcoming EV SUV variation of the Comet, known as the Baojun Yep, which will share the same platform and boast a boxy design with elevated ground clearance. This SUV model is expected to hit the Indian market in 2025.

According to MG Motor India, the GSEV electric platform used in the MG Comet EV features a durable solid steel frame with 17 hot stamping panels integrated throughout the body-in-white of the vehicle.

Insider sources have revealed that MG Motor has established a production objective of roughly 25,000 units annually for the Comet, which equates to roughly 2,000 units per month. Dealers anticipate that the Comet will be ready for delivery by the end of May 2023.

On the inside, the MG Comet EV is fitted with two floating screens, each 10.25 inches in size – one serving as the infotainment display, while the other functions as the digital instrument cluster. The vehicle also features a two-spoke steering wheel with controls reminiscent of the Apple iPod, along with physical rotary dials for the HVAC. Among the Comet’s notable features are connected car capabilities, an electric parking brake, hill-start assist, keyless entry and start, drive modes, and compatibility with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and voice commands.

Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, sources suggest that the MG Comet EV will likely run on a 20kWh battery, procured locally from Tata AutoComp and have a motor that delivers a power output of roughly 45 horsepower. According to insiders, this battery configuration could potentially provide a driving range of up to 250 kilometres.

Once it hits the market, MG Comet EV will vie for market share with other electric hatchbacks such as the Tata Tiago EV (priced between Rs 8.69 lakh-11.99 lakh) and the recently introduced Citroen eC3 (priced between Rs 11.50 lakh-12.43 lakh). Assembled domestically, the Comet is predicted to boast over 60% localized components for added competitiveness in pricing.
