What Really Happened
The aircraft, a Hawker Beechcraft BE-36, had just departed Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport around 12:10 PM. It was headed to Cherokee County Regional Airport in Canton. Moments after takeoff, the pilot alerted air traffic control (ATC) about engine trouble. FAA data shows the plane lost power and was unable to turn back to the airport.
With no other option, the pilot attempted to land on Browns Bridge Road near Pearl Nix Parkway, one of Gainesville’s busiest corridors. The plane came down on the roadway and hit three vehicles. Audio from air traffic control has the pilot issuing a mayday call and saying the aircraft would not make it. The distressed pilot even asked a message to be passed on to his family.
Teams Rush To Rescue…
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and police shut down the intersection. People involved in the incident were given immediate medical attention. They suffered injuries that were not serious, nor life-threatening. The police confirmed that the plane’s fuel tank was knocked loose by the impact and ended up lodged in the rear of an SUV. Despite that, there was no major fire or explosion.
Browns Bridge Road remained closed for several hours while responders cleared the wreckage and investigators got to work. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched a joint investigation to determine what caused the engine failure.
The incident caused heavy traffic delays throughout the afternoon, but officials emphasized that the outcome could have been far worse given the location and time of day.
