Tata Altroz finally has a turbo petrol engine in India
Tata Motors has just launched the much anticipated Tata Altroz iTurbo in India. The prices for the iTurbo starts at INR 7.73 lakh. The car would go against the likes of the Hyundai i20 T-GDi and Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI. The turbo petrol powered ‘iTurbo’ is available in the top three variants- XT, XZ, and the newly introduced top-spec XZ+.
The Altroz is the first proper premium hatchback from Tata Motors. Built on the all-new ALFA architecture, it was first launched in January 2020. It was then pitched as Tata’s Baleno rival, something which later turned out to be absolutely true. With its futuristic styling, creature comforts and unmatched safety, the Altroz did earn a place for itself in the segment. The car was then offered with two engines and a single transmission- a 1.2L NA petrol and a 1.5L turbo diesel, both mated to the same 5-speed manual gearbox.
After an year’s successful run, Tata Motors has chosen to celebrate the Altroz’s anniversary by giving it two key updates- a new top-of-the-line XZ+ trim and a turbocharged petrol engine, named ‘iTurbo’. While the base-spec iTurbo (XT) would cost you around 7.73 lakh and the mid XZ a good 8.45 lakh, the fully loaded XZ+ iTurbo will set you back by INR 8.85 lakh. (The top-of-the -line XZ+ variant with the 1.5 diesel engine would cost you 9.45 lakh) Tata Motors has given the car a new Harbour Blue paint scheme as well.
Powering the Altroz iTurbo is a 1.2L turbocharged, three cylinder petrol engine putting out 110 PS and 140Nm. This is a detuned version of the Nexon’s turbopetrol. The only transmission on offer for now is the 5 speed manual transmission that we had seen on the NA petrol and diesel Altrozes. However, a Schaeffler sourced wet-clutch 7 speed DCT is expected to debut on a later date.
There have been a bunch of additions to the equipment array as well. The Altroz now gets Tata’s connected car tech- iRA (Intelligent Real-Time Assist), which has on offer as many as 27 modern day connected mobility features- remote commands, location based services and vehicle commands to name a few. iRA also supports voice command recognition in English, Hindi and Hinglish.
Apart from the above, the Altroz iTurbo also boasts of premium looking leatherette seats, Xpress cool function for the AC, Auto roll power windows, two more speakers and tweeters for the Harman audio system, etc.
