The JTP had even been called India’s own performance brand back in its day!
It definitely feels like India is not a country for fast cars. What had earlier come in as India’s own performance brand has not been put to death. Yes, we are talking about the JTSV or the JTP line of cars indeed. As you all know, the JTSV (Jayem Tata Special Vehicles) was formed in 2017 with a 50:50 share stakeholding between Tata Motors and Coimbatore based Jayem Automotives. The venture spawned the Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP as the first products, both of which had back then amassed much applause for being brutally fast and precise. It was also believed that a Nexon JTP was in the works as well.
Tata Motors is now gearing up to buy Jayem Automotives’ shares in JTSV after which it will become a fully owned subsidiary of Tata Motors. The challenging market conditions of the day have made Tata Motors go for this. The FY 2019-20 was disastrous for JTSV and so had been the new emission norms kick-in. Further, the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic upon all these, meant that the sales of JTP vehicles slumped like never before. Thus the manufacturers have decided to discontinue the venture.
Tata Motors promises to provide all support and service to the existing JTP customers, through its select dealerships. Well, that is sort of relief, if implemented effectively, as there have been several instances in the past where JTP owners complained of being denied proper attention to their cars.
