Tata Sierra will give no option to choose for an ICE Powertrain
Tata Motors’ iconic SUV Tata Sierra is making a come back to India in an all-electric avatar. A report in Autocar India confirms that the Sierra will be the first EV-only model from Tata Motors. Tata currently is the market leader in EV space here, with its Nexon EV sitting comfortably with a 58% market share in 2021.
The new Tata Siera will have very little in common with its predecessor. The signature three-door design in the old model will make way for a five-door layout on the new car. The new Sierra will be a born-electric model, built on a dedicated EV platform that could accommodate no ICE powertrain ever.
New Sierra Will Be Based On The New Sigma Platform
The upcoming Tata Sierra will be based on a new Sigma platform, which happens to be a thoroughly reworked version of the ALFA-arc seen in models such as Altroz and Punch. The transition from ALFA arc to Sigma involves heavy restructuring and re-engineering. The Sigma platform has the battery pack as its center, around which the rest of the components are neatly packaged.

This would provide for added packaging efficiency and better balance. Signature ICE elements like transmission tunnel and fuel tank area would be deleted, and the side members pushed further to the sides to make room for the electric underpinnings, and for added cabin space. These are also claimed to make the end product slightly lighter and more energy-efficient than the current ICE-platform-based EVs.

Tata Sierra Electric Expected Launch Date
Even though Tata Motors has shown the green light to development, Sierra might not be launched in the Indian market before 2025, reports Autocar India. Tata Motors has been betting big on Electric Vehicles after the success of Nexon EV. The company is looking to launch as many as six electric models in the next five years. Expect more Sigma platform-based EVs as well.
