2020 Mahindra Thar Spied With Hardtop and Steel Rims, Launch Soon!

While many spy shots have emerged showing 2020 Mahindra Thar mule being tested with LED tail lamps and alloy wheels, we recently spotted this pre-production prototype with hardtop and steel wheels…

Mahindra Thar is heading for a major upgrade this year as the next generation Thar is about to hit the markets soon. We have already stumbled upon many spy shots disclosing various details of the vehicle. While the latest spy pictures show the 2020 Mahindra Thar being tested with good looking 5 spoke alloy wheels and LED tail lamps, as can be seen here, we recently found this pre-production prototype being tested in Bangalore with regular tail lamps and steel rims.

These spy shots, however, put forward many suggestions about the design of the 2020 Mahindra Thar. The Thar now resembles the mighty Jeep Wrangler more than ever. It has grown in proportions and has put up much muscle. The camouflaged mule shows prominent wheel arches and squared body making the Thar look utmost masculine. The rims have grown in size and must be riding on 235 or 245 section tyres in the production guise.

We managed to get sneak peeks into the cabin of the 2020 Mahindra Thar as well. The dashboard and the cabin get a complete makeover in the new-gen vehicle and there is now a large touchscreen infotainment system on offer too. The steering wheel design, though camouflaged partially in the mule, should also be new. The top-spec vehicle should get front-facing seats, front power windows, fabric seats and car-like interior air.

The new generation Mahindra Thar is built on a new ladder on frame chassis, that is evidently stiffer and stronger than the chassis of the outgoing Thar. There would also be a hardtop variant, like the one you see in pictures here, wherein you would no longer have to opt for any ‘dealer fitted hardtops’. This would, however, be available in just the higher trims, while the lower ones would continue with the conventional soft tops.

Talking of the 2020 Mahindra Thar specifications, all we know now is that there would be an all new BS6 compliant 2.0L diesel engine, developed through JV between Mahindra and Ford, under the hood. The anticipated power and torque figures are 140PS and 320 Nm respectively. The mill would come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

There would also be all necessary safety tech and equipment such as high-speed alert, front driver and co-driver seat belt reminder, rear parking sensors and ABS with EBD. Expect the new Mahindra Thar launch early in 2020…
