BYD Shark PHEV Truck Unveiled With 435 HP

BYD’s first pickup truck will be sold in the Mexican market

BYD has unveiled its newest plug-in hybrid in the global market. Dubbed ‘BYD Shark’, this is also the manufacturer’s first-ever pickup truck. Why the name? Well, it is in line with BYD’s ‘Ocean Series’ lineup of recent times. The other Ocean series models include BYD Seal that’s on sale in India, Seal U SUV and Dolphin hatchback.

Highlights

  • BYD Shark PHEV gets a design inspired by the Ford F150.
  • BYD’s first-ever pickup truck.
  • BYD Shark rivals the Isuzu D-Max, Ford Ranger, and Toyota Hilux.
  • India launch unlikely.
  • Gets a 1.5-litre hybrid turbo-petrol engine.

Design

The PHEV truck is built on the manufacturer’s DMO Off-Road ladder-frame platform. It gets a conventional double-cabin pickup truck design. You could spot several design cues that tend to resemble those of the Ford F150. The side view could evoke hints of the Rivian R1T. The Shark has an imposing stance.

Key design highlights include C-shaped LED DRLs, full-width light bar, a debossed BYD logo on tailgate, chunky cladding and skid plates, 18-inch alloy wheels, connected tail lamps, etc.

Off-Road Equipment And Capabilities

The Shark gets four disc brakes and front and rear independent suspensions. There are no solid axles, despite it being projected as an off-roader. This, however, does not shave huge chunks off the towing capacity or load-bearing. BYD Shark is claimed to have a towing capacity of 2500 kg and the 1450L rear tray can bear 835 kilograms.

Interior

The cabin is roomy and gets modern tech like two big screens- 12.8-inch touchscreen and 10.25-inch instrument console. The truck gets vertical air vents on the sides, an open storage area, 12-inch head up display, a 50W wireless charger, NFC, ADAS, Android Auto and Apple Carplay integration, a surround-view monitor and more.

Mechanical Specifications

BYD Shark gets a plug-in hybrid powertrain built around a 1.5 turbocharged petrol engine. BYD’s plug-in hybrid tech is called DMO (dual-mode off-road), indicating the integration of two axle-mounted electric motors, powered by a 29.58 kWh battery pack. The combined output of this is 435hp.

BYD Shark can do 0-100 kph run in just 5.7 seconds. The vehicle is claimed to have 100 km of all-electric range and would take 20-ish minutes to charge 30-80%, over a 40KW DC charger. It would have a combined range of 840 km. BYD Shark also offers 3 terrain modes- Snow, Mud and Sand.

BYD Shark India Launch?

As of now, we don’t see a possibility of BYD Shark PHEV coming to Indian soil anytime soon. The manufacturer’s present portfolio in India includes the E6, Atto 3, and the recently launched Seal sedan.
