MoRTH Mandates Dual Front Airbags For All Cars Sold In India.

Car safety in India is to get a lot better now…

The recent draft notification issued by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways mandates dual front passenger airbags on all cars to be sold in the Country. Thus,

The number of road accidents in India is scaringly high. In 2019 alone, there were 449,002 reported accidents and around 1,51,000 people lost their life and another 4,51,000 people were injured. With numbers rising uncontrollably, it is very important to be in a safer car these days.

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), last year had announced a list of standard safety equipment, including driver airbags, ABS, EBD reverse parking sensors, seatbelt reminders, etc, which are now mandatory for vehicles sold in the country. Now, the latest draft notification makes the passenger side front airbag mandatory too.

The base variants of the entry-level cars in India currently come equipped with only driver-side airbag, which very much puts the co-passenger in a dangerous situation in the event of an accident. The higher end variants get dual airbags in the front, however, you’ll have to pay an extra premium for the added safety features.

The appreciable move from MoRTH makes it compulsory for all vehicles to have dual front airbags as standard which will ensure more safety and could save the occupants from being badly injured in case of an accident. Of course, the prices of the cars will marginally go up once this comes into effect, but hey! It’s for a good cause.
