The Volkswagen Taigun will spearhead a slew of Made in India SUVs from Volkswagen Group
VW group is going all ‘made in India’ and we’ll get to see a lot of VW subsidiaries’ India-spec cars hitting our shores in 2021 as part of Volkswagen’s India 2.0 strategy.
The Taigun will be the first car which will be built on VW’s MQB-A0-IN platform, which is basically the India-spec version of VW’s popular MQB platform. Taigun was earlier showcased at the 2020 AutoExpo in the concept form and now in the recently released teaser video, the company tries to define the word ‘Taigun’ and gives a glimpse of the upcoming SUV.
The Taigun features the traditional VW design. No doubt it’s not a VW in any way. The double slat grille with some chrome elements is integrated with the LED projector headlamps hosting DRLs as well. It gets front and rear skid plates along with black body cladding which enhances the SUV-ish look. It’s pretty neat from the sides with well laid out character lines and the diamond cut alloy wheels (probably 16 inchers) and also gets roof rails.
The minimalistic approach is visible at the rear also. The tail lamps run across the trunk, we’ve seen it. We know the drill. A set of chrome line and reflector strip runs through the bumper keeping the uniformity.
Although there is not much clarity on the features on the inside, we expect it to be well equipped with features including, all-digital instrument cluster, 8 inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, sunroof, multi-zone automatic climate control system, etc.
Since the BS6 regulations came into effect, Volkswagen India has already disposed their diesel engines, so the Taigun will probably be powered by the 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine. A manual and an automatic transmission will be offered as well.
Once launched, Taigun will compete against the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Taking pricing into consideration it might as well lock horns with SUVs like Tata Harrier, MG Hector, Jeep Compass, etc.
