Rimac CEO Reacts To Elon Musk’s Tesla Roadster 0-60 mph Claims!

Musk’s ambitious “0-60mph in less than 1 second” claim for the Tesla Roadster has found a response from Mate Rimac.

You still remember the second-gen Tesla Roadster, don’t you? Especially the viral clips showing the electric supercar launching off the line at a blistering pace. Well, time does fly and that was way back in 2017. We are yet to see the Roadster in production guise at a Tesla dealership nearby. Despite the delay, Elon Musk is doing what he does best – firing up the hype surrounding what could be among the quickest supercars money can buy.

Musk’s plans to radically increase the design goals for the Roadster and one of the key targets to achieve being a jaw-dropping 0-60mph time of less than 1 second has been the talk of the town since last week. His immediate competitor in the EV supercar segment, Bugatti Rimac CEO Mate Rimac’s response has been widely discussed too.

Rimac’s very own Revera clocks 1.71 seconds for the 0-60mph dash. The Bugatti Rimac CEO sees thrusters as the only way to go for the Roadster to achieve the coveted “under-1-second” mark.

He said, “Problem is, you release the air in 2-3 seconds, and then you have a lot of dead weight that you are carrying around (tanks, compressor, valves, nozzles, etc.)” He was responding to a Facebook post regarding the topic. “It is possible with thrusters,” he says in the Facebook comment. “We did the simulation.”

Another option is to add suction fans, which are already being deployed in some sports cars. However, that will contribute to the weight of the EV supercar and add another load of equipment for the Roadster to carry around.

He explained, “Same with fans—they just give you more grip but you need something like 30,000 newton-meters on the wheels to accelerate below one sec 0-100 km/h, which means you need massive motors, inverters, gearboxes, driveshafts, etc.”

Then there is the weight which is one of the most crucial and hard-to-achieve goals for EVs. The Nevera itself weighs a whopping 2.3 tons. The Tesla Roadster got to be “super-light” to beat its Rimac rival.

As of now, Tesla claims the Roadster to have a 0-60mph acceleration time of 1.91 seconds. Having the Rimac Nevera beating that isn’t something Elon Musk is going to take lightly. And as far as we know, the man is going to move heaven and Earth to see his product seated on the throne. Even if it means finding ways to add 10 small thrusters into the design to get it in the sub-1-second time.

The production version of the second-gen Tesla Roadster is expected to be unveiled sometime in 2024 and the deliveries will follow suit in early 2025.
