Why Mahindra Scorpio-N Scored Zero Stars In Australian NCAP?

The Mahindra Scorpio-N, awarded a 5-star safety rating in India under Global NCAP’s ‘SaferCarsForIndia’ program, received a 0-star rating in the recent Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP) crash tests. This has raised major concerns over the SUV’s actual safety. We are here to explain the rating disparity in detail and clear the clouds.

The differing results stem from stricter protocols employed by ANCAP, which mandate the inclusion of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features like autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane support system (LSS). These features are currently unavailable in the Scorpio-N.

ANCAP evaluates vehicles across four key areas: Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, Vulnerable Road User Protection, and Safety Assists. The SUV scored 44% in Adult Occupant Protection, 80% in Child Occupant Protection, 23% in Vulnerable Road User Protection, and 0% in Safety Assists- the scores dropped primarily due to the lack of ADAS features.

As per Australian safety regulations, all passenger and commercial vehicles must be equipped with ADAS features, including AEB and LSS. Mahindra Scorpio-N currently lacks these features and no variant offering them exists.

While the SUV be considered safe in India basis the 5-star GNCAP rating, it fails to meet the stricter norms mandated by ANCAP due to the missing ADAS kit. Thus, a low ANCAP safety rating should not be a concern to Indian buyers.
