Mercedes Benz Just Got Serious About EVs!- Details

Mercedes has taken a significant step forward in the mainstream electric vehicle (EV) space with the 2026 Mercedes Benz CLA. This isn’t just an upgradeā€”it’s a complete transformation, making the new CLA entirely electric and boasting impressive specs. This move marks a serious commitment by the German to the EV space, potentially shaking up the competition.

A Bold Transition to Electric

The previous gas-powered Mercedes CLA was an entry-level luxury car for those wanting a taste of German engineering. Now, Mercedes has taken a bold step by making it fully electric, aiming directly at rivals like Tesla and BMW.

Mercedes’ current EV lineup falls under the EQ branding, almost like a separate brand. However, the new electric CLA only carries the “with EQ technology” suffix, signalling Mercedes’ intent to mainstream the EV tech.

It Has Impressive Specifications

The electric CLA will be available in two variants: the CLA 250+ and the CLA 350 4MATIC. The base-spec, CLA 250+, offers 268 horsepower and a maximum range of 792 kilometres (492 miles) on the WLTP standard. The CLA 350 4MATIC, with its all-wheel drive and dual motors, provides 349 horsepower and a range of 771 kilometres (479 miles) on the WLTP cycle.

These specifications are impressive for an entry-level luxury EV. Currently, the longest-range EV from Mercedes is the EQS 450+ sedan, which has a range of 510 miles (WLTP) or 390 miles (EPA) and starts at $104,400. In comparison, the BMW i4 EV offers a maximum range of 310 miles (WLTP) or 318 miles (EPA) and starts at $57,900.

The Competition Is Strong

The new CLA has the potential to be one of the best Mercedes EVs and one of the top German EVs if it meets EPA testing standards. While the Tesla Model 3 cannot be considered a luxury car, it is often mentioned in EV discussions. The Model 3 has a maximum range of 363 miles (EPA) but lacks some of the luxurious features and advanced technology found in the Mercedes, such as the optional MBUX Superscreen.

A Hybrid Option On The Cards

Mercedes also announced a hybrid version of the CLA, which will combine an electric motor with a 1.5-litre gas engine. Although the specs haven’t been revealed, it is expected to have some electric-only range. This shows the manufacturer’s commitment to making the CLA appeal to a wider audience.

Competitive Pricing and Availability

Mercedes’ move to electrify the CLA is a serious push towards widespread EV adoption. Prices for the new model haven’t been announced yet, but given the previous CLA’s starting price of just over $43,000, it is expected to be competitive. The least expensive Mercedes EV, at present, is the EQB which starts at $53,050, close to the $44,990 Tesla Model Y.

Mercedes plans to release the 2026 CLA 250+ in U.S. dealerships later this year, making it an exciting addition to the EV market.
