BS4 Registration Deadline Extended By Supreme Court!

Against the Pan India lockdown owing to Coronavirus COVID 19 concerns, the honourable Supreme Court has granted a conditional extension for the BS4 registration dates in the country, following the continuous plea for the same by FADA

You and I know that India is under a lockdown till mid-April, owing to the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns. We also know that the BS6 norms were scheduled to kick in on April 01, which is less than a week from now. With the lockdown in play, we do see BS4 inventory getting piled up in dealerships and sold vehicles being unable to get registered, even as we move towards April.  Thus, following the continuous plea for the same from the dealer apex body FADA, the Honourable Supreme Court Of India has granted a conditional extension to the BS4 registration deadline in the country.

As per the latest court order,

  • 10% of the unsold BS4 inventory at the dealerships will be allowed to be sold for a certain number of days post the 21 days lock-down.
  • The BS4 vehicles which have already been sold, but yet left unregistered, will be allowed to be registered for a certain number of days post the end of the lock-down.

However, the above orders do not apply to the Delhi-NCR, where the sale and registration of BS4 vehicles are not allowed at any costs. Also, time still remains to get clarity on the Supreme court’s definition of the ’10 percent unsold BS4 stock’

With almost all the manufacturers having successfully shifted to manufacturing BS6 vehicles, lakhs of units of unsold BS4 inventory still remain at dealerships across India. The market here has been going through some serious crisis all this while. Thus owing to the low buyer sentiment, many dealers have not been able to find customers for their BS4 stock even after declaring hefty price cuts and other offers.

The leftover stock could either be dismantled and sold as spares or registered to the names of the dealerships and sold as pre-owned cars in India, as Autocar India reports. It remains to be seen as to what the dealer federation would do with this unsold inventory.
