We list all the known facts and trivia about the 2022 Mahindra Scorpio ahead of its launch.
The cat is finally out of the box! After a series of teasers, Mahindra has finally revealed the all-new Scorpio through a set of official images, and also announced an official name for the new vehicle which was erstwhile referred to as the ‘ Z101 SUV’. A cinematic video of the same is now live on Mahindra’s official Youtube channel, giving a more detailed look at the SUV. Before we list out the details of 2022 Scorpio, here’s the video for you to drool over!
Z101 To Be Called Mahindra Scorpio-N
In our story around the Scorpio’s recent teasers, remember us telling you about our doubts on Mahindra’s probable plans for a new name for the Z101? We had told you then, that the manufacturer could come up with a new variation of the OG Scorpio moniker. It seems our predictions were spot on! The Z101 SUV would be called the Scorpio N, where N could signify ‘New’ (Much like the ‘Neo’ in Bolero Neo) or it could be taken for Mahindra’s hint at the stealth and agility of a Scorpion, qualities which the vehicle in question could also possess.
The Scorpio And Scorpio N Would Co-Exist!
The Scorpio N rolling out would not mean that Mahindra would axe the outgoing Scorpio. The carmaker confirms that both the models would co-exist, and also that the outgoing Scorpio would now on be called the ‘Scorpio Classic’. This would add further to the legacy of the iconic Indian SUV. However, sources report that there would be no major price cuts or benefits on the Scorpio Classic, for the time being.
Mahindra Scorpio N Design:
With its wraps off, Mahindra Scorpio N looks great. It is big, brawny, and butch. The overall design incorporates multiple modern cues even while staying true to the OG Scorpio’s shape. You would not mistake it for anything but a Scorpio. It stands upright and is imposing in nature.
Key design highlights of the Scorpio n include the neat headlamp designs, a new front bumper with prominent air intakes and skid plates, neat-looking grille with vertical Chrome slats and the new Mahindra logo on it, a big bonnet with neat lines accentuating its bulk, tall pillars, new set of wheels, kink on the window line, roof rails, and high-mounted tail lamps.
Mahindra has not revealed the rear design yet, and from whatever we have seen in the spy pictures, the rear could also look equally good and could come with more accents in the production form, than whatever was seen in the spy shots.
While we agree that the Scorpio-N is good-looking and looks fresh, a part of the internet crowd is busy spotting possible visual resemblances with other existing vehicles that they’re familiar with. We’ve stumbled upon multiple such claims (allegations!) involving names like Volvo, Maruti Wagon R, and the Safari Storme. We would like to dismiss all of these and reaffirm that this ain’t no design steal from any existing models, but the way Mahindra’s design language has evolved (ripened!) over the years!
Specifications: Platform, Engine, Transmission
The Scorpio-N would be underpinned by an all-new platform. This ladder-on-frame, RWD chassis would house major improvements over the one used on the outgoing SUV. While it would primarily be an RWD offering, the top-spec trims are expected to offer optional 4WD.
The new Scorpio would share many of its mechanicals with the new Thar and XUV700. Like these hot-selling Mahindra cars of the day, the new Scorpio-N would also come with a 2.2 mHawk diesel and 2.0 mStallion turbocharged petrol engines. The output figures of these, however, could differ from those of the XUV and the Thar. A 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT are expected to be offered on both petrol and diesel powertrains.

Scorpio N Will Get A New Cabin And Lotta New Equipment!
The cabin will undergo a major overhaul on the new Scorpio N. Though no official images of these are out yet, we know that the overall cabin design and layout would have great resemblances to those of the new XUV700. The dashboard aesthetics, plastic quality, and touch surfaces would all be on par with those on the XUV. The steering could come straight from it too, with minimal changes gone into it.
There would be a lot of feature additions on the new vehicle. Things like a new center console, new semi-digital instrumentation, flat-bottom steering wheel, roof-mounted premium Sony speakers, leather seats, wireless charger, a large touchscreen infotainment system (hopefully from the XUV), dual-zone climate control, cruise control, sunroof, etc are expected. Rumors also say that Mahindra could also bring in a HUD on the new vehicle.
The other major change expected on the 2022 Scorpio is in its last row seating. The previous version’s Jump seats would be replaced with a forward-facing bench in the third row. This should help a great deal in increasing the overall safety.
Should Rohit Shetty Buy One? Twitter Discusses This!
As has been the case with every other Mahindra of recent times, Twitter has the conversation going around the Scorpio-N even before its market launch! And like every other time, bossman Anand Mahindra has turned up with a ‘toast-winning’ one-liner!
The buzz happened around Anand’s tweet sharing the Scorpion’s video teaser, to which a smartie replied with a meme featuring Rohit Shetty. The Indian film director particularly known for movies like Singham, Sooryavanshi, and Chennai Express, is quite infamous for using a lot of Mahindras in the stunt sequences in these. More specifically, most of his films feature a lot of Scorpios being involved in crashes or blasted to pieces in stunts or during fights.
Responding to the funny meme, the Mahindra bossman delivered a hooking one-liner: “Rohit Shetty ji, is gaadi ko udaane ke liye aap ko ek nuclear bomb ki aavashyakata hogi…”- translating to “Rohit Shetty ji, you would need a nuclear bomb to destroy this vehicle!”
While this might seem just a witty, spot-on reply to something funny, Mahindra would do no bluffing on the Scorpion’s safety. Like all modern-day Mahindra vehicles, the new Scorpio would also be built strong. It would come with all modern safety equipment like multiple airbags, ABS, EBD, and more. With the forward-facing third row completing the charts, a five-star NCAP rating would not be too unreal a dream!
