Underwhelming crash test results for three popular small cars…
Maruti Suzuki Swift, S-Presso and Ignis have undergone another round of crash tests under the G-NCAP’s revised protocols, to score extremely underwhelming 1-star ratings in both adult and child occupant safety. The crash tests were conducted earlier this week along with the Mahindra Scorpio-N, which received a 5- star rating. This was the second batch of vehicles being tested under the stricter new Global NCAP guidelines, that came into effect in July this year.
While the Swift barely managed to score a 1 star for child protection, both Ignis and the S-Presso scored zero stars for the same. GNCAP concluded that the bodyshells of all three Maruti cars were unstable and unable to withstand further loadings, based on their performance at the safety test.
None of the Maruti models offered the ESC ( Electronic stability control ) as standard and also didn’t comply with the UN127 pedestrian protection norms, which became highly important under the new safety protocols.

Alejandro Furas, Secretary General, GlobalNCAP, made a statement of concern about the pathetic performance of the Maruti Suzuki cars, one of the largest auto manufacturers in the nation, in the NCAP tests.
Maruti Swift Safety Rating 2022
Swift was only able to score 19.19 out of 34 in adult occupant protection while scoring 16.68 out of 49 in child occupant protection. It scored 6.3 points in the frontal offset deformable barrier test and 12.9 points in the side movable deformable barrier test. G-NCAP noted that the Swift was able to offer good protection to the driver’s and passenger’s head and neck in the frontal impact test. It received 16.68/ 49 for child protection. This comprises a dynamic score of 12.82 points and an installation score of 3.86 for CRS (child restrain system).
Maruti S Presso Safety Rating 2022
Maruti S-Presso scored 20.03 points for adult occupant protection and just 3.52 points for the safety of the child occupant. Even though the test car was equipped with dual front airbags, a seat belt pre-tensioner and load limiter as well as a seat belt reminder, it could only offer good protection to the head and neck of the driver and passenger, while failing to provide the same for the head and neck of both driver and passenger.

Maruti Ignis Safety Rating 2022
In the case of Maruti Ignis, a score of only 16.48 points was achieved for adult occupant protection, while scoring an even piteous 3.86 points for child occupant safety. The side impact test found that head protection was graded as weak, chest protection as poor, adequate abdomen protection and good pelvis protection.
