BMW is gearing up to launch the fully electric M cars in the near future, but in the meantime, it’s introducing a range of M Performance EVs that give a glimpse of what’s to come. The i4 M50 and the iX M60 were the first to arrive, and now the i7 M70 is joining the lineup. This high-performance electric sedan is based on BMW’s flagship luxury model and features the company’s most powerful electric motor configuration to date, delivering 651 horsepower and a chassis tuned by the M division.

The i7 M70 boasts a polarizing design, with oversized illuminated kidney grilles attached to its classic three-box shape. The car also sports the typical gloss black exterior graphics found on other BMW performance models, with a black front fascia, door mirrors, and optional two-tone paint finishes from the company’s Individual program. The exterior changes are minimal, with the M70 version featuring slightly bulkier sills and a more pronounced rear valance.

Like all BMW performance sedans, the i7’s enhancements go beyond its exterior design. Underneath the skin, the car is built on a modified version of the CLAR platform, which serves as the basis for many of BMW’s current models, including the 2-series, 4-series, and even the petrol 7-series. The i7 M70 comes with BMW’s most potent eDrive electric motors, making it one of the most powerful road cars from the brand.
The i7 M70’s 450 hp rear motor is an upgraded version of the i7 xDrive60’s motor. The front motor remains unchanged, producing 254 hp. The combination of both motors produces a total output of 651 horsepower, making the i7 M70 the most powerful electric BMW ever made. Peak torque when using launch control is 1099Nm. It can accelerate from 0 to 100kmp in just 3.7 seconds. The top speed is limited to 250 km/h.

According to BMW, the i7 M70’s traction control system is integrated into the motor units, which provides precise tuning and quick reactions from the software. The car’s chassis electronics work in conjunction with M-specific hardware, including redesigned air springs, retuned dampers, and a stiffer body shell that benefits from a sheer panel located between the bulkhead and front suspension turrets. Other dynamic features include active roll control, retuned active steering, and an M Sport brake setup.
BMW i7 M70 xDrive Range, Battery And More Details
The i7 M70 retains the standard i7’s 101.7 kWh (usable) battery pack, which is located beneath the car’s floor. This allows the M70 to have a range of 560 km, which is 39 km less than the xDrive60. However, the car’s new ‘max range’ button can configure the drivetrain and HVAC systems for maximum efficiency. This increases the range by 15 to 25 percent as per reports. Thanks to the 195 kW DC rapid charging capability, the car can be charged up to an additional 170 km of range in just 10 minutes at a compatible charging station.

The cabin is heavily digitised, with minimal physical switchgear and ambient lighting that blends well with the transparent panels on the doors and dashboard. BMW’s latest iDrive 8.5 system controls the infotainment suite. It combines a 12.3-inch instrument panel with a 14.9-inch touchscreen display. The setup offers M-specific graphics, a virtual assistant and 5G connectivity, but the tech extends to the rear seats with the i7’s roof-mounted Theatre Screen (a 31.3-inch ultrawide display).
