No more V8 or PHEV for India!
Land Rover has shaken things up for the Defender in India. The highly successful, iconic SUV sees a significant overhaul in terms of variants and pricing. Gone are the days of choosing between petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and even a monstrous V8. The Defender lineup offers fewer powertrain choices, something that might not be to everyone’s taste.
Earlier you could spec your Defender in countless ways with multiple engine options from the base to the V8. But those days are behind us. Land Rover has decided to simplify the range with just two engine options: petrol and diesel.
Fewer Choices, Higher Starting Price
While the choice may be limited, there’s still plenty of Defender versions to go around. You can still opt for the classic three-door 90, the popular five-door 110, or the spacious 130. However, don’t expect to find a pocket-friendly Defender anymore. With the removal of the base petrol 90, the starting price has climbed to Rs 1.04 crore, ex-showroom.
On the plus side, the top-end price has dropped dramatically (now tipping 1.57 Cr ex-showroom), thanks to axing the V8. But if you were eyeing up that potent petrol power, you’ll have to look elsewhere. However, Land Rover has confirmed that orders for the Defender Octa V8 will be fulfilled, as long as supplies last for India.
What’s Left?
So, what’s actually on offer? Well, the petrol engine is now exclusive to the 110 in X-Dynamic HSE trim. If diesel is your thing, you have more options. The 3.0-litre diesel is available across all three body styles and in three trim levels: X, Sedona Edition, and X-Dynamic HSE.
It’s a significant change for the Defender, and one that will undoubtedly divide opinion. Some will appreciate the simplified range, while others will mourn the loss of their favourite engine or body style.
