Ford CEO: ‘Next-Gen Ford F-150 Prototype Production In 2027’

Ford CEO Jim Farley has confirmed that prototype builds of the next-generation F-150 will begin in the first quarter of 2027. The 15th-generation truck, code-named P736, is currently expected to make its debut in April 2028, later than previously anticipated. Ford is also stepping up its durability and endurance testing, with Farley promising that the new F-150 will be the most extensively tested truck in the company’s history.

Speaking during Ford’s third-quarter 2026 earnings call, Farley confirmed that development of the next F-150 is progressing toward the prototype stage.

“We’re bringing the same discipline to the next generation F-150. Prototypes begin, builds are beginning in first quarter of ’27, just a couple months away,” he told investors.

The next-generation model was previously expected to arrive in 2027. However, the latest timeline points to an April 2028 launch.

Ford has followed a fairly consistent product cycle with the F-150 over the past few generations. The truck has typically received a mid-cycle refresh every three years, followed by a full redesign after six years. The upcoming generation will arrive later than that expected schedule.

Ford Is Increasing F-150 Testing

Farley also outlined the extensive testing program planned for the new pickup. Ford is increasing its powertrain durability testing fivefold as part of its effort to meet what the CEO described as a “bulletproof powertrain” target.

The company is also doubling endurance and strength testing. Full-vehicle test mileage will increase by nearly 60%, reaching almost four million miles.

Farley said the next F-150 would become the most extensively tested truck Ford has ever built. The automaker also intends to apply the same testing approach across its wider vehicle lineup.

The increased testing is aimed at improving durability and ensuring the new truck can withstand demanding real-world use.

Next-Gen F-150 Could Get A New EREV Powertrain

Farley has previously said the redesigned F-150 will bring major improvements in cost, technology, powertrain options, and functional features.

One of the biggest expected changes is the introduction of an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain through the return of the F-150 Lightning. Unlike the current all-electric Lightning, the EREV setup is expected to combine a large battery pack and electric motors with a gasoline-powered generator.

This configuration is expected to deliver a driving range of up to 700 miles. The gasoline engine would generate electricity to keep the battery charged, reducing the need to rely entirely on charging infrastructure for longer journeys. Ford has not yet released the complete specifications of this powertrain.

Could The New F-150 Get A Passenger Screen?

The redesigned F-150 could also receive a passenger-side display, according to a report from Ford Authority in June.

Passenger screens are becoming increasingly common in modern vehicles. They allow front passengers to access entertainment and navigation features without requiring the driver to interact with the display.

The feature would also help Ford keep pace with the redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, both of which offer passenger-side screens.

Ford has not confirmed whether the feature will make it to the production F-150. More details about the truck’s interior, technology, and powertrain lineup are expected as development progresses.
