Honda is turning the wild Civic Type R HRC Concept into a production car, and it is being developed specifically for the US market. The track-focused version will get more power, extensive weight-saving measures, racing-inspired aerodynamics and upgraded hardware. Honda is aiming to bring genuine motorsport technology to a road-legal Civic Type R, with the limited-run production model expected to arrive in 2027.
Honda Civic Type R HRC: What Makes It Special?
First unveiled at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon, the Civic Type R HRC Concept is now moving towards production. It will make its North American debut at the 2026 SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
Unlike a regular cosmetic upgrade package, the HRC version is being developed with technology and expertise from Honda Racing. The company will use feedback from professional racing drivers to improve the car’s performance and handling.
The production model will take inspiration from Honda’s TCR race cars, but it will remain road legal. The idea is to deliver a more capable track machine without making it too uncomfortable or impractical for everyday use.
For reference, the standard US-spec Civic Type R uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged K20C1 four-cylinder engine. It produces 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox.
The standard model weighs 3,188 pounds and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in around 4.9 seconds. Its claimed top speed is 170 mph. The HRC version will build on this setup with several mechanical and aerodynamic upgrades.
More Power From The 2.0-Litre Turbo Engine

Honda is expected to increase the engine output to around 335 hp, giving the HRC version an additional 20 hp over the standard Civic Type R.
The power boost is likely to come from revised ECU tuning, a less restrictive intake system and a custom titanium performance exhaust developed by Akrapovič and HRC.
However, adding power is only part of the job. A track-focused car must also manage heat during repeated hard driving. To address this, Honda is expected to borrow cooling hardware from its Super Taikyu endurance racing programme.
The upgrades could include an improved HRC radiator, a much larger front intercooler and a redesigned front bumper intake. These changes should improve airflow and help the engine maintain consistent performance during extended track sessions.
Carbon Fibre Parts And Wider Bodywork
Honda is reportedly targeting a weight reduction of around 44 to 66 pounds (20 to 30 kg). Extensive use of carbon fibre exterior parts will help achieve this.
The HRC version is also expected to get lightweight forged alloy wheels and carbon-backed Recaro bucket seats. These upgrades should reduce weight while giving the cabin a more focused feel.

The exterior will receive some major changes as well. The Civic Type R HRC is expected to feature wide, box-style fender flares inspired by Honda’s Super GT race cars. They will make room for a wider track and wider front tyres, which should improve front-end grip.
Other expected additions include a front lip spoiler, a larger rear diffuser and a taller rear wing with oversized endplates. These components are designed to generate more downforce and improve stability at higher speeds.
Upgraded Brakes For Track Use
With more power and greater track capability, the Civic Type R HRC will also need stronger brakes.
Honda is expected to equip it with larger brake rotors and Brembo six-piston front calipers. The calipers could get a yellow finish, adding another motorsport-inspired detail to the package.

Prototypes of the HRC model have already been spotted testing at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan. This gives Honda an opportunity to evaluate the car’s performance on a demanding race track before production begins.
Honda Civic Type R HRC Launch And Expected Price
The production version is expected to arrive between mid-2027 and late 2027 as a limited-run 2028 model.

For reference, the standard Civic Type R starts at $47,395 in the US, excluding fees and optional equipment. The more focused HRC version is expected to cost more than $55,000.
Honda has not yet confirmed the final specifications, pricing or production numbers. More details are expected as the car moves closer to its launch.
Honda’s SEMA Display Will Feature More Performance Machines
The Civic Type R HRC will not be the only attraction at Honda Racing Corporation’s booth at the 2026 SEMA Show.

The Honda Passport Baja Spec Trophy Truck will also be on display. This desert racer is expected to produce more than 1,300 hybrid horsepower from an F1-inspired 2.4-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine.
Three modified 2027 Honda Passport TrailSport Baja Chase vehicles will join it. These SUVs will feature specialised HRC dampers, custom Titan7 forged wheels and mobile support equipment.
The display will also include the 2026 Acura ARX-06 GTP prototype wearing a special endurance racing tribute livery. Its appearance follows its victory at the 2026 Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta.
Rounding out the lineup will be the 2026 Honda Civic Type R TCR race car, which won at IMSA Watkins Glen.
The production Civic Type R HRC is particularly interesting because it aims to bring racing technology to a car that can still be driven on public roads. With more power, wider tyres, upgraded brakes and extensive weight-saving measures, it could become a much more serious track machine than the standard Type R.
