Jaguar Electric Four-Door GT Will Be Called Type 01

Jaguar has finally named its first all-electric model from the modern era. The four-door GT will be called Type 01. This also marks the return of the carmaker’s ‘Type’ naming system. It marks the beginning of a completely new chapter for the brand.

A Name That Connects To The Roots

The Type 01 name is closely linked to the concept shown in 2024. It was called the Type 00. Jaguar has now dropped one zero for the production version. There is a meaning behind this. The “0” in its name represents zero tailpipe emissions, highlighting the electric powertrain. The “1” stands for the first model in Jaguar’s new-generation EV lineup.

The branding itself will be subtle. Instead of large badges, Jaguar will use a small “Type 01” motif placed near the base of the windshield.

The name also connects the car to the company’s legacy. The brand has used the “Type” naming on some of its most iconic models, including the D-Type, E-Type and the more recent F-Type. With this, Jaguar is clearly trying to link back to its roots.

Design: Close To Concept, But More Practical

Spy shots suggest that the production car will stay close to the concept with its design. That said, there will be some practical changes.

The biggest one is the addition of two extra doors. The concept was a two-door, but the production version will be a four-door GT. This makes it more usable.

The overall styling is expected to be bold and different. Jaguar is not playing safe here. The car will stand out on the road, but it may not appeal to everyone. The design is likely to be polarising.

All-New Platform, Impressive Performance

The Jaguar Type 01 will sit on a brand-new platform called the Jaguar Electric Architecture. This is a dedicated EV platform developed specifically for future Jaguar models.

The car will use one electric motor at the front and two at the rear. Combined output is expected to cross 1,000 hp, with torque figures around 1,300 Nm.

This is not just about straight-line speed. With three motors, the system can control power delivery more precisely, which should improve handling as well.

Battery And The Bigger Challenge

The battery pack is expected to be around 120 kWh. That should give it a strong driving range, although exact numbers are not known yet.

For Jaguar, the bigger challenge is ensuring reliability. Its previous EV, the I-Pace, was well received for its design and driving experience. However, it also faced multiple recalls related to battery issues.

With the Type 01, Jaguar will need to prove that it can deliver not just performance and design, but also long-term dependability.
