The homegrown carmaker becomes the second popular manufacturer in December
Tata Motors pips Hyundai in December sales to become the second-largest manufacturer of passenger vehicles in India. This is the first time in a decade that Tata finished second in monthly domestic sales.
Tata Motors sold a record 35,300 units in December 2021, against Hyundai’s 32,312 units. The December numbers also happens to be the highest ever for the homegrown automaker. Tata had a bumper year in 2021, selling 99,000 in the October-December period alone and a total sale of 3.31 lakh units in the year as such. The recently launched Tata Punch has been a great volume puller for the brand here. Other popular monikers include Nexon, Altroz, and Safari. All these drove notable volumes in December.
The commendable performance comes from amidst the ongoing global chip crisis that’s been plaguing the entire car manufacturing industry for some time. This had made Tata Motors slow down production, much like multiple other car manufacturers.

Hyundai, however, had resisted the supply issues for long, but had to finally give in and scale down production, and even worse to observe ‘ no production days’ due to these. The overall sales figures had an uptick in 2021 and Hyundai’s market share rose to 19.2%, despite the manufacturing crises.
