Upcoming MG Cloud EV Teaser LIVE, ‘Sofa Mode’ Confirmed!

The EV will not be called ‘Cloud’ in India!

India’s love affair with electric cars is heating up. MG is preparing to add more spice to it, by bringing a new all-electric model to the Indian soil. The British brand will launch a rebadged Wuling Cloud EV in the country during this festive season. While details are still sparse, here are a few things that we know about this upcoming MG electric car.

The Promising Teaser

MG has released the first official teaser of the Cloud EV. It shows a few key details of the vehicle. You can see a full-width LED light bar and DRLs, a panoramic glass roof, a Comet-like steering wheel design, and fully reclining seats. In the following paragraphs, we’ll analyse the design, and details suggested by the teaser, and talk about the vehicle in further detail.

The ‘CUV’ Speak!

MG prefers to call the Cloud EV a CUV. The vehicle is essentially a crossover- one that combines the comfort of a sedan with the expanse of an SUV (that’s by the way, the brand speak!). Unlike the previously launched Comet, the CUV will have a stylish design with all the flair you’d expect. It will also be bigger than the Comet (and smaller than the ZS) and likely compete with the Nexon EV.

Expect A New Name

While we know it is the Wuling Cloud EV that’s coming, the vehicle will have a new name in the Indian market. It will not be called MG Cloud EV. We are yet to get any data on the new nomenclature though.

Expect High Degree Of Localisation And Minor Restyling

Sources suggest that the Indian-spec could differ slightly in design, from the Wuling Cloud EV showcased at IIMS 2024. We aren’t sure of the changes though.

Courtesy of the ongoing partnership with JSW, MG Cloud EV could have an extremely high degree of localisation. It could have associations with various Indian vendors in its production, like Minda for example. We will get to know more details of this, closer to the launch timeline. Localisation would also allow JSW MG Motor India to keep the costs in check and possibly come up with a Nexon EV killer on pricing grounds.

Expected Features

Much in keeping with the brand practice of packing its products with tech, the MG Cloud EV could come with a lot of technology and features. It will have a panoramic glass roof, two large screens/displays, 360 camera, a wireless charger, cool LED lights, a good-quality audio system and plush seats that can recline to levels nearly flat! The brand calls this the ‘sofa mode’. The Indonesian spec model also comes with ADAS. We are unsure if MG would bring this to the Indian spec.

Expected Specifications

MG Cloud EV will have a heavily localised spec chart. We are told that there will be two versions of the EV- a regular range and an extended range. Battery capacities and exact specifications are unclear at the moment. In global markets, however, the Wuling Cloud EV gets two battery choices- a 37.9kWh with 360km range and a 50.6kWh unit that offers up to 460km. The Indian-spec could source its battery packs from Tata Motors- like what the Comet did.

The ABC Trio

Interestingly, Wuling had an ‘ ABC Stories’ program in developing EVs. Part of the brand’s ‘This is my EV Way’ movement, three electric vehicles were developed, names of which began with the letters A, B and C respectively- Air, Binguo and Cloud. It was the Wuling Air that was later brought to India as MG Comet. Yes, MG could consider bringing the Binguo to our land too!

MG Cloud EV India Launch Timeline

JSW MG Motor India will launch the Cloud EV (or whatever it’s gonna be named) in the Indian market during this festive season. We’ll get to know more about it in the weeks to come. The EV will compete with the likes of the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 400, and some variants of the upcoming Curvv EV.

Expected price? Well, considering MG’s tradition of pricing their products disruptively, we expect the Cloud EV to start well below 15 lakh, ex-showroom and the top-spec to be under 20 lakh ex-sh.

With the Cloud EV joining the clan, MG’s portfolio in India will have a 50:50 split between ICE and EVs. The brand’s EV vertical is doing good in sales as well. From what we know of yet, MG aspires to launch a slew of electric vehicles in India in the coming years. MG 4, MG 5 and Cyberster are all coming. It is just a matter of time!
