The Mercedes Benz S Class has finally entered the W223 generation, here’s more about this vehicle…
The 2021 Mercedes Benz S Class has finally made its global debut. The W223 generation of the car takes strong design inspiration from the facelifted E Class revealed a year ago. The new S Class has the Digital Light system, which consists of a module of three powerful LED lights that can project symbols and guidelines on the roads. The heavily chromed grille with three horizontal slats gives the face a familiar air of the S Class. You could also find chrome at a number of places on the car like the exhaust tips, door handles, bumpers etc. There is also the option to choose from 18 and 21-inch wheels on the global model.
The 2021 S Class has grown significantly in size. The length, width, and height have increased 34mm, 22mm, and 12mm respectively while the wheelbase has bumped by 51mm. The boot is now as large as to accommodate 550 liters of luggage.
It has also had great leaps ahead in terms of technology and equipment as well. The second-generation MBUX system does the job on the new S Class. It has a large 12.8-inch tablet-like OLED infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as well. The rear passengers get to enjoy up to three screens- two mounted on the front seats and one armrest mounted tablet. The infotainment unit supports OTA software updates too.
Mercedes Benz has further upped the quality and luxury on the inside of the car and has packed oodles of technology in it. A detailed ambient lighting arrangement with as many as 263 LEDs, AR-enabled heads up display, 31 speakers Burmester 4D surround sound system, etc are all part of the package.
The all-new S Class will have 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines on offer. The petrol mills would have mild hybrid assistance named EQ Boost which provides an additional 22hp and 250Nm. There would be two states of tune to this engine. The S450 would have this put out 367hp and 500Nm and there would be 435hp and 520Nm available on the S500. Mercedes Benz is also known to launch a mild-hybrid petrol V8 and a plugin hybrid to the car on a later date.
The diesel engine would produce 286hp and 600Nm in the S350d and 330hp and 700 Nm in the S400d. The 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system is standard o all variants except the S350. The transmission duties are handled by a 9-speed automatic gearbox.
The new S Class gets a rear-axle steering system, providing for a turning radius of under 11 metres. The car also gets a host of interesting safety tech like a frontal airbag for the rear passenger, pre safe impulse side function, etc as optional extras. There is also Level 3 autonomous driving capability onboard the 2021 S Class for the global markets.
Enthusiasts around the globe are expecting a coupe, convertible, and AMG guises of the new S Class in the near future. Mercedes Benz has confirmed that they would bring the car to India sometime in the second half of 2021, in the long-wheelbase form. Much of the tech will remain unchanged, while the Indian model would not have the autonomous driving ability.
