Unsurprisingly, the Hyundai i10 for Europe gets a lot of added safety tech than its Indian counterpart
The India-spec Hyundai Grand I10 had scored 2 star rating in the GNCAP crash tests conducted recently, and now its European-spec has scored 3 stars in the euro-NCAP tests which are much more uncompromising than the ones from GNCAP.
Euro-NCAP and GNCAP ratings are nowhere near in the comparable field. The Euro-NCAP crash tests are very stringent and absolute or rather let us put it this way, scoring 3-stars in Euro-NCAP is very strenuous than scoring the same in GNCAP.
The Euro-spec I10 is basically same as the Indian counterpart, but on the safety front it gets a lot more standard safety equipment as mandated by the European Safety standards. The car gets standard front and curtain airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiters at the front and rear, Autonomous Emergency Braking(AEB), speed and lane assist systems. Whereas the India-spec only gets two frontal airbags, ABS and seatbelt pre-tensioners only for front seat occupants.
The Euro-spec I10 secured 69% in adult occupant safety, 75% for child occupants safety, 52% pedestrian safety and the overall effectiveness of its safety assist system scored a good 59%.
A series of stringent tests like, mobile progressive deformable barrier, full-width rigid barrier, mobile side impact barrier, side pole, far side impact, whiplash, vulnerable road users’ impact, safety assist system and rescue and extrication, were ll performed on the car before finally giving it a score. Meanwhile GNCAP ratings are mainly based only on the front offset crash tests.
Clearly, the India-spec Grand i10 wouldn’t have scored even 2 stars in the Euro-NCAP crash test and it’s rather unsurprising to say the Euro-spec car is much safer than the one we get in India.
