Much Anticipated Kia Sonet Breaks Cover, Launch Soon!

The Kia Sonet would offer a diesel engine mated to a six-speed AT for the first time in its segment

Kia Motors India has unveiled its third product for India after the extensively popular Carnival and Seltos. The mid size SUV dubbed Sonet would make its official market launch soon in the country. The SUV will go against the likes of Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Ford Ecosport, Mahindra XUV300, Honda WRV and the upcoming Toyota Urban Cross and Nissan Magnite.

Kia claims the Sonet to have been inspired by the baby elephant. Quite in keeping with this, the overall design of the car reflects majesty and youthfulness. The production guise of the Sonet has quite a lot in common with the concept showcased at the previous Auto Expo. The front end has an air of youthful aggression to it.

There are the magnificent headlamps with catchy ‘heart beat’ LED DRLs, a slightly modified interpretation of Kia’s Tigernose grille and a brawny skid plate all in place. Kia says that the Sonet’s grille has taken design cues from the step wells, which are common sights in India. The elegant design of the C Pillar is what sets the silhouette unique. Wrap-around rear windscreen and ‘heart beat’ LED tail lamps adorn the rear of the Sonet.

The Sonet’s cabin gets a catchy look and feel. There is plenty of equipment on offer as well. The Sonet’s 10.25 inch HD touchscreen with Navigation and live traffic is the largest and the best in its class. The SUV also gets a large digital display for the instrumentation as well. Other features worth talking about include the sunroof, wireless charger with cooling function, OTA map updates, UVO Connect, BOSE premium sound system, ventilated front seats, LED mood lighting among others.

The Sonet will come with a wide range of engine and transmission options. On offer are a 1.2L petrol, 1.0L turbocharged petrol, and 1.5L diesel engines. The available transmissions include 5 and 6-speed manuals, 7 DCT, 6AT, and iMT. The clutchless manual or the iMT and the 7DCT will be offered on the 1.0L turbo petrol model while the 1.5L diesel with the 6AT is a segment first. The Sonet will be the first car in its segment to have the top of the line, sportier GT Line.

There will be no compromise on safety as well, and the car will come with six airbags, ABS, ESC, EBD, Hill Assist, brake assist, front and rear parking sensors, projector fog lamps, tyre pressure monitoring, auto headlamps and ISOFIX child seat mounts.

The Sonet will be the most affordable offering from the Korean carmaker upon launch and the prices are expected to fall in the 7-12.5 lakh range. Kia has not given clues of the official launch date yet but we expect it to happen sometime in September 2020.
