Heavy rains at Spa led to a severe shortening of the sunday race!
Much heat has been surrounding this year’s Belgian GP as it has been raining heavily at Spa-Francorchamps for the past few days. The practice sessions and the qualifying race were all held on wet slippery tracks, amidst the downpour and were all eventful as well. There were multiple incidents of aquaplaning, rooster tails and a few crashes too. Similar incidents were expected for today’s main race as well. However, things took a different turn today!
A Gloomy Race Day!
The rains were so heavy today that the main race could not witness a start at the scheduled time. Even before the scheduled start time, Sergio Perez was involved in a crash on his way to the grid, owing to the wet track conditions. The rains did not stop and the race-start was pushed by around 25 minutes.
25 minutes up, a number of formation laps were performed behind the safety car, following which the race director announced a red flag. Three hours later, the race started again, as the climate showed slight improvements. The cars did a few laps behind the safety car, Verstappen leading the pack, through the wet Eau Rouge, before meeting with another red flag. Behind Verstappen was Russel, followed by Hamilton. Most of the positions remained almost the same as the qualy results. The race was later called off and the standings declared final.
This race was thus the first F1 podium for Russel. The Williams driver has had his first podium in an equally surprising way as he had had his first front row qualy finish yesterday. McLaren’d Lando Norris, after yesterday’s horrific crash, did show up for the main race, but had a five-place grid penalty as his MCL35M had to have its transmission replaced post the crash. The Brit thus finished at P14. The drivers were awarded half points for the day and are expected to return next week at Zandvoort.
