The Volkswagen Virtus sedan will be built upon the India-spec MQB A0 IN architecture
Volkswagen is readying a new sedan offering for India. Volkswagen Virtus, the carmaker’s MQB A0-based compact sedan is being evaluated for launch here, as a replacement for the existing VW Vento. Images of a left-hand-drive mule (apparently a South America spec car) undergoing what appears to be component testing, on the outskirts of Mumbai have now surfaced, hinting at chances of a possible market launch.
Volkswagen Virtus Sedan: What Is It?
The Virtus for the global markets is a compact sedan based on the new VW Polo. It is underpinned by the same MQB platform as the one in the all-new VW T Cross. With an overall length of 4.48 meters and the likes of a digital cockpit and enhanced connectivity options on offer, the Virtus has a decent market presence in markets like South America.
Volkswagen Virtus India Spec: What We Know So Far?
You might remember us telling you about Volkswagen Group’s India 2.0 project, aiming at local production of their international components and models with maximum possible localization. The initiative is soon to spawn the VW Taigun SUV as an entry ticket to the range of affordable Volkswagen cars. The Taigun will be built on a heavily Indianised version global MQB platform, with as much as 95 percent localization gone into it. Dubbed the MQB A0 IN, this new architecture would support a number of bodystyles. With the Taigun spearheading the India-spec range, more models are expected to join the clan.
From the latest industry updates, the VW Virtus will follow the Taigun (much the same way as the launch of the Skoda Rapid replacement will follow that of the Kushaq) The India-spec Virtus will be underpinned by the MQB A0 IN architecture and powered by the familiar 110hp 1.0 TSI petrol engine, mated to the 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. In terms of dimensions, the Virtus will be slightly larger than the outgoing Vento and would have significant equipment additions as well.
The Volkswagen Virtus sedan is expected to launch in India sometime in early 2022, with the Taigun itself scheduled for a late 2021 debut. Upon launch, the Vento replacement would have to battle the likes of Hyundai Verna, Toyota Yaris, Honda City, and Maruti Ciaz.
