The upcoming Ford Fathom electric pickup will be built at the Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky, where Ford is carrying out a major transformation to prepare the factory for its next generation of affordable EVs. Ford Is Transforming The Louisville Plant

Ford has been rebuilding and reconfiguring the Louisville Assembly Plant since late 2025 in preparation for production of the Fathom and other vehicles based on the Universal EV platform.
The changes go well beyond installing new equipment. Ford is rethinking how vehicles move through the factory and how workers interact with the production process. Instead of sending every vehicle through one long assembly line, the new system divides production into multiple sections that operate simultaneously before coming together during final assembly.
Bryce Currie, Ford’s vice president of Americas manufacturing, describes the approach as an “assembly tree.” Rather than relying on one continuous conveyor, three major sub-assemblies move down separate production lines at the same time before eventually joining together.
One line handles the front section of the vehicle. Another builds the rear section. The third focuses on the structural battery along with components such as the seats, center consoles and carpeting. These sections eventually come together during the final assembly stage, which automakers commonly refer to as the “marriage.”
The goal is to reduce the amount of time and movement required to build each vehicle while making the manufacturing process easier to manage.
The Factory Is Designed Around The Worker
Ford’s changes at Louisville are also focused on improving how workers access components during production.
In a recent Ford video, Kevin Young, the company’s manufacturing program chief, showed the progress being made inside the facility. One of the most noticeable changes is how parts are positioned around production areas.
Instead of forcing operators to walk around the vehicle or search for components, the factory is being arranged so parts can be brought directly to them. Ford says workers will have clearer sight lines to the components they need, reducing unnecessary movement during assembly.
Young explained that the production system is designed around the idea that “the vehicle is going to bring parts to the operator.”
That may sound like a relatively simple change, but reducing unnecessary movement can have a significant effect when multiplied across thousands of vehicles. Ford is attempting to improve both manufacturing efficiency and operator ergonomics at the same time.
The Louisville facility is still under construction and remains a work in progress, so the final production environment has yet to be seen.
The Fathom Will Lead Ford’s New EV Production Strategy

The Fathom is important because it is the first vehicle designed around Ford’s Universal EV platform and the company’s new manufacturing philosophy.
Ford wants the architecture to support multiple future models. Instead of developing completely different manufacturing processes for each vehicle, the company can use common systems and components across several products.

Ford Fathom Production Is Expected To Begin In 2027
Ford has indicated that prototype Fathoms equipped with production-qualified parts are scheduled for a first-quarter 2027 rollout. Customer vehicles are expected to arrive later in 2027.
The truck will be produced at the Louisville Assembly Plant rather than being imported from another market. That makes the Kentucky factory a critical part of Ford’s next-generation EV strategy.
The Fathom is expected to start below $30,000, including destination charges. Achieving that price will require Ford to keep manufacturing costs under control, which is precisely why the new production system matters so much.
The company is essentially trying to change the economics of building an EV at the same time it develops the vehicle itself. It has set an ambitious target for the Fathom. Ford wants to sell 100,000 units of it in the first year.
What Do We Know About The Fathom?

Although Ford has kept much of the truck’s design and technical specification under wraps, several details have already been confirmed or reported.
The Fathom is positioned as an electric midsize pickup, although its actual dimensions may place it closer to the compact Ford Maverick. It is expected to have a spacious cabin, with Ford claiming passenger volume greater than that of the Toyota RAV4.
The truck is also expected to target a 4.5-second 0-to-60-mph time. Ford has confirmed features including Apple Maps integration, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and available BlueCruise.
Other reported details include potential single- and dual-motor powertrains, along with rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations. An LFP battery chemistry is also expected, although Ford has not yet disclosed the final battery specifications or official driving range.
The design appears focused on efficiency as well. Prototype images show steeply angled A-pillars and aerodynamic wheels, both of which could help reduce aerodynamic drag and improve range.
Ford Has Already Started Testing The Fathom
The Fathom may still be covered in camouflage, but development is clearly well underway.
Ford CEO Jim Farley recently shared photographs of prototypes undergoing testing in Las Vegas. Those trucks were part of a broader hot-weather testing program, giving the public another look at the upcoming electric pickup.
Ford has also been testing Fathom prototypes in other parts of the country, including cold-weather conditions. These tests are essential before production begins because Ford needs to validate the vehicle across a wide range of temperatures and driving conditions.
The next major milestone will be the transition from development prototypes to production-qualified vehicles. That process is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027.
