Thar Roxx- The Naming Saga
Numerous rumours surrounded the 5 door Thar till the day it had an official name. Some expected it to be called the Thar Armada, thereby resurrecting the iconic nameplate. Dismissing those for mere rumours, Mahindra came up with a rather unconventional name for the 5 door SUV- Thar Roxx!
Naming it ‘Roxx’, that too with two ‘X’s, seems like a bold move from the manufacturer. What does the name mean? Well, Mahindra keeps it clean and simple by saying ‘ it (The SUV) embodies the spirit of a rockstar, combining robust performance with refined elegance’. Like it or not, the name is Roxx.
We might also interpret the name to have cosmic connections with the ‘Roxor‘ (previous generation Thar is named so in the US market) or the ‘MAXX‘ way of naming Mahindra vehicles with extra room and bigger dimensions.
Product Placement
In Mahindra’s domestic lineup, the Thar Roxx will sit above the 3 door Thar and below the flagship off-road SUV- Scorpio N. With a length of 4.3 meters, it will be a compact SUV in the actual sense of the term. Expected price ranged from Rs 15 lakh to 25 lakh, ex-showroom.
Breaking all previous expectations, Mahindra came up with disruptive pricing for the Thar Roxx. The SUV has 18 variants, with the base petrol starting at 12.99 lakh ex-showroom! The base diesel has a sticker price of 13.99 lakh. Below are the variants and price details. Mahindra is yet to reveal the prices of certain 4×4 variants.

Who Is This For?
This could be a very popular question. The 3 door Thar is quite loved for its go-anywhere capabilities. The rugged design and imposing road presence are adored by most people. However, the SUV has its own set of compromises, limits and inabilities in terms everyday livability and practicality. There are people who continue to complain about the space, creature comfort and ride quality compromises made by the 3 door version. The Thar Roxx will try to address these, hopefully without compromising on capabilties.
The target audience for this vehicle, would thus be adventure seekers and urban explorers who are concerned about everyday usability and practicality as well. The vehicle will expand the moniker’s target customer base by a sizeable chunk. If it feels as good in metal as in images and teasers, the Thar Roxx could fit in the ‘only car’ framework. We’ll get to know more about this, post debut …

Design
Mahindra has been teasing us with images and videos revealing the key design cues of Thar Roxx. The SUV will do justice to the ‘Thar’ moniker with its design. Key design highlights include a new set of LED headlamps with integrated DRLs, a new 6-slat grille ( unlike the controversial 7 slat grille of the 3-door), tweaked wheel arches, a new roof line and C and D pillars, a reworked tail, and new wheels.
Though the manufacturer chose to give minimal clues of the side view in early teasers, a production-spec Thar Roxx was spied during the TVC shoot, revealing key details of the side design. The images showed new wheel designs, unconventional C and D pillars, exposed door hinges, new roofline and pillar-mounted rear door handles.
Thar Roxx Colours: We do not have the complete list of colours yet. However, Mahindra recently revealed a White colourway that looks stunning on the vehicle. We are not sure if this is the same ‘Everest White’ paint from the 3 door. It is indeed a shouty colourway! A second confirmed paint is the Black, which has been starring in most teaser videos.
In dimensions, the upcoming vehicle will be significantly larger than the 3-door counterpart. It will have a wheelbase of over 4.4 meters while the 3-door remains a sub-4-meter offering. The wheelbase will also be longer.
Length | 4428 mm |
Width | 1870 mm |
Height | 1923 mm |
Wheelbase | 2850 mm |
Track Width | 1580 mm |
Boot Capacity | 447 liters/ 664 liters |
Will there be a Thar Roxx convertible?
While the sloping rear pillars might suggest the distant possibility of a convertible, the Thar Roxx gets a metal roof and stiff body shells that say otherwise.
Interior And Features
The cabin is significantly roomier and packed with features. The interior gets likeable trims and good-quality materials, as suggested by the latest teaser. Expected features and creature comforts include a larger touchscreen, Harman Kardon premium audio (Not Sony this time!), 360 camera, ventilated seats, automatic climate control, 10.25 inch digital cluster, leather upholstery etc.
There will also be a panoramic sunroof on higher variants, while the mid-spec will come with single-pane sunroofs. But why a sunroof on a Thar? Well, many of you asked for it !
Safety Tech
Mahindra Thar Roxx will have a lot of safety features and tech on offer. There will be airbags, ABS, EBD, ESP, etc. It will also get level 2 ADAS, and thereby become the third Mahindra to do so.
Specifications: Platform, Engines And More
Mahindra Thar Roxx will be underpinned by a variation of the Scorpio-N platform (3G platform). The Scorpio N platform is Mahindra’s newest ladder-frame chassis and has its roots in the previous Scorpio (now Scorpio Classic), and interestingly, in the 3-door Thar. Mahindra used this chassis as the base to improve heavily into what is now used in the Scorpio N. Stiffness has been increased significantly and weight saved.
The Thar Roxx will get a lighter, improved derivative of the 3G platform. Mahindra calls it the M Glyde platform. It is lighter and better than the Scorpio N platform. The two SUVs will thus have entirely different persona and dynamics. The M-Glyde uses tech which we saw on the Scorpio N like FDD, and is very sorted on comfort and dynamics fronts. We have talked in detail about this in our Thar Roxx review.
Unlike the 3-door, the Roxx will have a metal hard top and body shell made of high-tensile Steel. Talking of the body shell, did you know that a seemingly discarded Thar Roxx shell was recently spotted at a scrapyard in Mayapuri ?
The M Glyde comes with an independent double wishbone suspension at the front and a penta-link ( with Watts linkage) setup at the rear. With its wide stance and this advanced suspension, the Thar Roxx feels planted around corners with little to no ‘tail outs’.
Engines and gearboxes: The Roxx will have both petrol and diesel powertrains. It will borrow these from the Scorpio N/ XUV 700. You get to choose from the familiar 2.2 diesel and 2.0 turbo petrol mills, and from manual and automatic transmissions. There is no 1.5 diesel offered at launch. Both 4×4 and 4×2 configurations are available with the former being offered on select trims only.
