Mahindra Global Pickup Concept (Z121) Revealed In South Africa!

The Global pickup draws a lot from Mahindra Scorpio N. Here’s everything to know…

On the occasion of India’s independence day, Mahindra revealed a lifestyle pickup concept at an event held in South Africa. The yet-unnamed global pickup vision car is based on the new Mahindra Scorpio N. However, the production form of the project codenamed Z121, would have a few key deviations from the current Scorpio N, including a more-advanced ladder frame chassis.

Mahindra Global Pik-Up Concept Design And Dimensions

Designed at Mahindra International Design Studio (MIDS), the global Pik Up has some wild styling cues. When you look at it from the front, it’s easy to tell it’s derived from the Scorpio N. The headlights, bonnet, fenders, and front doors could seem familiar from a distance. A detailed examination would, however, reveal that the pickup’s headlights come with better, more intricate detailing.

The bumper has a prominent bash plate with tow hooks at the bottom, and the grille is good-looking with a lot of detailing gone into it. The concept also has a snorkel to help with water-wading, and there’s a big LED light bar on the roof rack, which could be offered as an accessory on the production model.

A lot of Scorpio N can be spotted on the concept’s side as well. The lower edges of its doors get chunky cladding. The double-cab concept has a floating buttress design for the load bed, and the show car carried two spare tyres in its deck.

Mahindra hasn’t disclosed the truck’s wheelbase, but it is expected to be longer than that of the Scorpio N, with a reasonably large load area. The Scorpio N pik up could come with a similar wheelbase as the upcoming 5-door Thar.

The tailgate has embossed ‘Mahindra’ lettering on it, and the rear bumper gets 2 tow hooks, with the middle one shaped like a step for easy access to the load bed. Tail lights on the concept have pixel-like detailing as was previously revealed in teasers.

Mahindra Global Pickup Specifications: Platform And Engines

Mahindra says the Z121 pickup will be underpinned by Mahindra’s next-generation ladder-frame chassis, which is hoped to be better than the one on Scorpio N. This platform is said to have class-leading stiffness due to the extensive use of high-strength steel.

The Global Pik Up will be powered by Mahindra’s Gen 2 mHawk diesel engine, mated to a 6MT or an Aisin-sourced 6AT gearbox. The. all-Aluminium engine is said to offer ‘unparalleled low-end torque’. The vehicle will also offer 4WD (4WH and 4WL) with shift-on-fly, and selectable terrain modes- Normal, Grass-Gravel-Snow, Mud-Rut and Sand. Though Mahindra hasn’t spoken about it yet, some markets could also get petrol versions of the Scorpio N pickup- hopefully with a derivative of the mStallion engine.

Mahindra Global Pik Up Launch Date

Mahindra will launch the production form of Global Pik Up in 2025. The manufacturer identifies India, Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Oceania and South America as primary target markets for the truck. Going by the previous instances, Mahindra is very likely to give the India-spec disruptive pricing. This would make the Scorpio N pik up a strong rival to the likes of Toyota Hilux.

It is unclear if Mahindra will resurrect the ‘Getaway’ moniker or choose to go with the ‘Pik Up’ name for the production form. In many international markets, the Scorpio Classic-based truck is called ‘Scorpio Pik Up’.
